WormsAndGermsMap returns as a real-time disease tracking tool
A decade after its first attempt, Worms & Germs has relaunched WormsAndGermsMap, an interactive, real-time disease mapping platform for companion animals, including horses. The project, developed by University of Guelph infectious disease specialist Scott Weese and Maureen Anderson of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, is meant to let veterinary clinics, surveillance programs, and the Worms & Germs team log and visualize selected infectious disease reports as they emerge. The original map concept dates back several years, but Weese said the earlier version didn’t stick because the technology wasn’t ready; the current platform is positioned as a more usable reboot tied directly to the long-running Worms & Germs educational effort. Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, the value is less about perfect surveillance and more about earlier signal detection. Real-time mapping can help clinics spot local clusters, changing disease range, and potential outbreaks sooner, while also giving teams a practical tool for client communication around risk, prevention, and vaccination. That kind of visibility can be especially useful for diseases that spread quietly across regions before formal surveillance catches up. (wormsandgermsmap.ca)
What to watch: The key question now is whether enough clinics and reporting partners participate to make the rebooted map a durable surveillance tool rather than another promising pilot. (wormsandgermsmap.ca)
