Proteine Resources launches VELI wet pet food line at Interzoo
Proteine Resources, a Poland-based alternative protein company, has launched VELI, a new functional wet pet food line built around its EntoPro ingredient, a blend of insect-derived protein and bioactive compounds sourced from mushroom cultivation byproducts. The company introduced the line at Interzoo 2026 in Nuremberg, held May 12-15, and says the platform reflects eight years of R&D. Company materials describe VELI as targeting gastrointestinal and skin health through a combination of prebiotic fiber from chitin and added postbiotics designed to remain stable through wet food sterilization. Proteine Resources also says formal in vivo testing with the University of Agriculture in Krakow is now beginning, following internal palatability work and in vitro studies. (interzoo.com)
Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, VELI is another sign that insect protein is moving beyond sustainability messaging and into clinically framed nutrition, especially around GI and dermatologic support. That said, the company’s efficacy claims appear to be at an early stage: Proteine Resources cites in vitro work and upcoming in vivo testing, but there’s not yet a published clinical study showing outcomes in dogs or cats. In the U.S., any product making disease-treatment claims would face regulatory scrutiny, and FDA notes that pet food ingredients must be safe, appropriately used, and truthfully labeled, while canned pet foods must also meet low-acid canned food rules. What to watch: Watch for peer-reviewed animal data, regulatory progress outside Europe, and whether VELI’s gut- and skin-health positioning stays in the nutritional-support lane or edges into drug-like claims. (petfoodmedia.com)
