PMMI launches CPG NexGen Awards for young packaging leaders: full analysis

PMMI has introduced a new recognition program for young professionals on the consumer packaged goods side of the business, launching the first annual CPG NexGen Awards on May 27, 2026. The program will honor 10 professionals age 35 and younger who work at CPG or end-user companies and are contributing through innovation, leadership, operational excellence, and problem-solving. Nominations are open through July 17, 2026, with the winners set to receive a hosted VIP-style experience at PACK EXPO International 2026, scheduled for October 18-21 in Chicago. (pmmi.org)

The move fits into PMMI’s broader workforce-development strategy. PMMI has been investing in scholarships, young professional programming, and industry talent initiatives through both the association and the PMMI Foundation. It also builds on the organization’s existing “On the Rise” awards, which have historically recognized young professionals from PMMI member companies, largely on the supplier side of packaging and processing. By contrast, the new CPG NexGen Awards are aimed at professionals working for the companies that buy and use packaging machinery, processing equipment, automation, and materials. That distinction is important. According to PMMI’s award page, eligible nominees must be 35 or younger as of July 17, 2026, have been with their current company for at least two years, and work in roles such as engineering, operations, packaging, or technical innovation at a CPG or end-user company. PMMI defines those end users as companies that use or purchase packaging machinery, processing equipment, automation solutions, and materials to make and package products. Nominations can come from managers, colleagues, suppliers, or other industry partners, suggesting PMMI wants broad participation across the packaging ecosystem. (pmmi.org)

The winner package is also designed to do more than provide a plaque. PMMI says honorees will receive complimentary registration to PACK EXPO International, roundtrip airfare, a three-night hotel stay, access to the First-Time Attendee Lounge, an invitation to the Young Professionals Networking Event, recognition at PACK gives BACK™, a private show floor tour, and on-site digital signage recognition. PMMI’s launch announcement frames the program as a way to recognize rising talent while also helping participating companies showcase their commitment to innovation and leadership development. PACK EXPO International itself is positioned by PMMI as North America’s largest packaging and processing showcase, with 2,600 exhibitors and roughly 48,000 attendees expected across more than 40 vertical markets. PMMI leadership is explicitly tying the awards to succession planning and talent retention. In the launch announcement, President and CEO Jim Pittas said the industry is being reshaped by a new generation bringing fresh ideas, technical expertise, and leadership. That message echoes PMMI’s recent commentary around its On the Rise program, where the association and its Emerging Leaders Committee have consistently emphasized professional development, visibility, and network-building for younger workers in packaging and processing. Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, especially those working in pet food manufacturing, this is a useful signal about where packaging and processing organizations see the labor market heading. Pet food companies increasingly need younger technical staff who can bridge production, packaging, automation, food safety, and supply chain demands. A program that highlights end-user talent, rather than only OEM or supplier talent, reflects the reality that operational excellence inside manufacturing plants is becoming a competitive issue. It also gives pet food companies a visible way to recognize internal rising leaders in packaging engineering, plant operations, and process improvement, areas that directly affect throughput, compliance, product quality, and workforce stability. (pmmi.org)

There’s also a brand and recruiting angle. PMMI’s award materials repeatedly stress that nominating companies can use the program to elevate their reputation as places that invest in emerging leaders. In a tight labor market for technical and manufacturing talent, that kind of industry recognition can support retention and employer branding, especially for sectors like pet food that compete with larger food and beverage manufacturers for the same engineering and operations talent pool. That’s an inference based on PMMI’s stated goals around visibility and leadership development, but it aligns closely with how the association is positioning the award. (pmmi.org)

What to watch: The next milestones are clear: nominations close July 17, 2026, nominators are expected to be notified of results on August 28, 2026, and the inaugural class will be recognized during PACK EXPO International in Chicago in October. For the pet food sector, the key question is whether companies in animal nutrition and related manufacturing categories use the new program as a talent-development platform, or whether participation skews more heavily toward larger mainstream CPG brands in food, beverage, and household products.
