Pet Advocacy Network makes board and officer changes

The Pet Advocacy Network said May 28 that its board unanimously approved a set of leadership changes, appointing John Mellace of Pet Express to the board and electing Robert Cook as vice chair, Brent Neil as treasurer, and Amanda Fredal as secretary for the rest of the current officer terms. The move follows Elizabeth Kunzelman’s departure from the board seat Mellace will fill, while Chris Buerner is stepping out of the secretary role but remaining on the board. PAN said Kunzelman will continue with the organization in a senior government affairs role as it expands its advocacy work. (petadvocacy.org)

Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, the leadership shuffle is worth watching because PAN remains an active policy voice on pet retail, animal transport, zoonotic disease alerts, and access to pets and pet care services. The organization traces its roots to the former Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, rebranded in 2022, and says it advocates at local, state, federal, and international levels. Changes in board leadership can shape how aggressively the group engages on legislation and regulatory debates that intersect with veterinary medicine, animal welfare, biosecurity, and consumer protections for pet parents. What to watch: Watch for whether PAN’s new board lineup translates into a more visible policy push on pet retail legislation, public health issues, and member engagement over the rest of 2026. (petadvocacy.org)
