Westminster’s night one winners set the stage at 150th show

The Westminster Kennel Club named its first four group winners of the 150th annual dog show on February 2 at Madison Square Garden: Afghan Hound “Zaida” won Hound, Maltese “Cookie” won Toy, Lhasa Apso “JJ” won Non-Sporting, and Old English Sheepdog “Graham” won Herding. The milestone show drew more than 3,000 champion dogs from all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 17 additional countries, with daytime breed judging at the Javits Center and evening group competition at the Garden. Night one also featured a “Westminster Legends” tribute and in-arena appearances tied to the Masters Agility Championship and flyball tournament. (res.cloudinary.com)

Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, Westminster remains a high-visibility showcase for breed type, conditioning, grooming, and handling standards that can shape pet parent interest in specific breeds after a nationally televised event. This year’s results also underscored the continued prominence of established show lines, while the 150th anniversary amplified public attention on purebred dogs, breed preservation, and the broader sport ecosystem that includes conformation, agility, and flyball. What to watch: The seven group winners advanced toward Best in Show on February 3, with attention also on whether Westminster’s anniversary spotlight translates into sustained breed demand and more questions from pet parents about breed-specific health, temperament, and care. (akc.org)
