Westminster’s night one winners set Best in Show field
The Westminster Kennel Club announced its night one group winners on February 2 at Madison Square Garden during the 150th annual dog show, advancing four dogs to the Best in Show lineup: Zaida, an Afghan Hound, won Hound; Cookie, a Maltese, won Toy; JJ, a Lhasa Apso, won Non-Sporting; and Graham, an Old English Sheepdog, won Herding. Westminster said the milestone event drew more than 2,500 conformation entries, while separate pre-show materials had projected more than 3,000 dogs across the broader event schedule, which also included agility and flyball competitions. Night one also featured a “Westminster Legends” tribute and the debut of the Vin-Melca Trophy for the Hound Group winner. (res.cloudinary.com)
Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, Westminster remains a highly visible showcase for breed type, handling, and the public image of purebred dogs, and that visibility can shape pet parent demand for specific breeds. It also keeps breed-linked health questions in the spotlight, especially as critics continue to argue that some conformation standards can reward traits associated with welfare concerns, including respiratory compromise and cosmetic procedures such as ear cropping. What to watch: The immediate next step was Best in Show on February 3, when the four night one winners were joined by the Sporting, Working, and Terrier winners; AP later reported that Penny, a Doberman Pinscher, ultimately won the 150th Westminster title. (res.cloudinary.com)
