Westminster’s 150th show sends four night one winners to finals
The 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show opened its milestone anniversary run on Monday, February 2, 2026, at Madison Square Garden, with four group winners advancing to Best in Show: Zaida, an Afghan Hound, won Hound; Cookie, a Maltese, won Toy; JJ, a Lhasa Apso, won Non-Sporting; and Graham, an Old English Sheepdog, won Herding. Westminster said the event drew more than 3,000 champion dogs from all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 17 additional countries, with group judging and Best in Show returning to Madison Square Garden for the sesquicentennial event. Night one also featured a “Westminster Legends” presentation, plus in-arena appearances tied to the Masters Agility Championship and flyball competition. (showsightmagazine.com)
Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, Westminster remains a high-visibility showcase for purebred dogs, breed standards, and the breeder-handler ecosystem that shapes pet parent demand, referral conversations, and public perceptions of canine health. This year’s scale and reach, including all 202 AKC-recognized breeds and broad international participation, underscore how influential the event remains across breeding, grooming, nutrition, sports medicine, and preventive care discussions in practice. Westminster also has a visible connection to the veterinary field through its Veterinarian of the Year program, which highlights mental health in the profession. (res.cloudinary.com)
What to watch: Night two on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, completed the remaining groups and Best in Show, where Penny, a Doberman Pinscher, ultimately took the top prize. (apnews.com)
