Westminster night one sends four group winners to Best in Show
The 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show opened its group competition on Monday, February 2, with four finalists advancing to Best in Show: Zaida the Afghan Hound won Hound, Cookie the Maltese won Toy, JJ the Lhasa Apso won Non-Sporting, and Graham the Old English Sheepdog won Herding. The milestone event returned conformation group judging to Madison Square Garden, after daytime breed judging at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, and drew a limited field of 2,500 conformation entries as part of Westminster’s sesquicentennial celebration. Westminster also used the occasion to debut the new Vin-Melca Trophy for the Hound Group, honoring breeder-owner-handler Pat Trotter. (akc.org)
Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, Westminster remains a high-visibility showcase for breed type, movement, coat, and presentation, and it can shape pet parent interest in specific breeds long after the ribbons are awarded. This year’s night-one winners span very different care profiles, from the coat and skin demands of the Afghan Hound, Maltese, Lhasa Apso, and Old English Sheepdog to the orthopedic, ophthalmic, dermatologic, and preventive counseling needs that often follow spikes in breed attention. The event also underscores the continued influence of breeder-owner-handlers and preservation breeding in the purebred dog ecosystem that many veterinary teams serve. (akc.org)
What to watch: The immediate next step was Best in Show on Tuesday, February 3, where the night-one winners joined the Sporting, Working, and Terrier winners in the final ring, and Penny the Doberman Pinscher ultimately took Best in Show. (apnews.com)
