Westminster names first four group winners on night one
The Westminster Kennel Club named its first four group winners on night one of its 150th annual dog show at Madison Square Garden on Monday, February 2, 2026. According to the club’s official night-one release, the Hound Group went to Zaida, an Afghan Hound; the Toy Group to Cookie, a Maltese; the Non-Sporting Group to JJ, a Lhasa Apso; and the Herding Group to Graham, an Old English Sheepdog. Westminster said the milestone event drew more than 2,500 conformation entries, with breed judging held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and group competition returning to Madison Square Garden. (res.cloudinary.com)
Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, Westminster remains a high-visibility showcase for purpose-bred dogs, breed standards, and the public narratives surrounding canine health, structure, and performance. That visibility cuts both ways: while the event celebrates breeding programs and handler expertise, it also arrives amid renewed animal welfare criticism over brachycephalic health and purebred-related disease risks, putting more attention on how breeders, veterinarians, and clubs talk about health, function, and responsible breeding to pet parents. What to watch: Night two completed the remaining groups and culminated in Best in Show on Tuesday, February 3, when Penny, a Doberman Pinscher, took the top prize and Cota, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, was named Reserve Best in Show. (westminsterkennelclub.org)
