Elite Treats recalls single lot of chicken chips over Salmonella

Elite Treats LLC of Boca Raton, Florida, has recalled one lot of its 6-ounce Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs after potential Salmonella contamination was identified in a related, commercially unreleased lot during third-party laboratory testing. The recalled treats, lot number 24045 with an expiration date of 04/2027, were distributed through Florida Hardware, LLC to feed stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. No illnesses had been reported as of the FDA’s February 24, 2026 announcement. (fda.gov)

Why it matters: For veterinary teams, this is another reminder that pet treat recalls can carry both animal health and zoonotic risk. The FDA said pets may develop lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain, while exposed people can become infected through handling the product, contaminated surfaces, or contact with pets shedding Salmonella. That makes client education on disposal, hand hygiene, bowl sanitation, and monitoring exposed pets especially important, even when no illnesses have yet been reported. CDC also notes that pet food and treats can transmit germs that sicken both animals and people. (fda.gov)

What to watch: Watch for any recall expansion, reported illnesses, or follow-up communications from FDA and distributors about additional lots or retail reach. (fda.gov)
