Elite Treats recalls one lot of chicken chips over Salmonella risk
Elite Treats, LLC of Boca Raton, Florida, has recalled a single lot of its Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs in 6-ounce black-and-gold bags after potential Salmonella contamination was identified. The affected product is marked with lot number 24045 and an expiration date of 04/2027. According to the FDA-posted company announcement, the recalled treats were sold to Florida Hardware, LLC and distributed to feed stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The company said the issue was flagged after a third-party laboratory found Salmonella in a related, unreleased lot of the same product, and no illnesses had been reported as of the February 24, 2026 announcement. Why it matters: For veterinary teams, this is another reminder that pet treat recalls can carry both animal and human health implications. FDA notes that pets may develop lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain, but some exposed animals may remain asymptomatic and still shed the organism. That means clinics may need to counsel pet parents not only on GI signs, but also on household hygiene, environmental cleaning, and the risk of transmission through bowls, utensils, countertops, feces, and saliva. What to watch: Watch for any expansion of the recall, reported illnesses, or additional FDA updates tied to manufacturing investigation findings. (fda.gov)
