Elite Treats recalls one lot of chicken chips over Salmonella

Elite Treats LLC, of Boca Raton, Florida, has recalled one lot of its 6-ounce “Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs” after third-party testing found Salmonella contamination in a related, unreleased lot of the same product. The recalled treats were sold through Florida Hardware, LLC to feed stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The affected bags are black and gold, marked with lot number 24045 and an expiration date of 04/2027. No illnesses had been reported as of the February 24, 2026 FDA-posted company announcement. Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, this is another reminder that pet treat recalls can carry both animal and human health implications. FDA notes that dogs may develop diarrhea, vomiting, fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain, but some exposed pets may remain asymptomatic carriers and still shed Salmonella into the home. That makes client counseling on exposure history, hygiene, and environmental cleaning especially important when pets present with compatible GI signs, or when pet parents in affected states ask about recall risk. What to watch: Watch for any expansion of the recall, reported illnesses, or additional FDA updates tied to Elite Treats’ investigation into the source of contamination. (fda.gov)
