Elite Treats recalls one lot of Chicken Chips for Salmonella risk
Elite Treats LLC, of Boca Raton, Florida, has recalled one lot of its 6-ounce “Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs” after a third-party lab found Salmonella contamination in a related, unreleased lot of the same product. The affected treats are sold in black-and-gold bags marked with lot number 24045 and an expiration date of 04/2027. According to the FDA-posted company announcement, the recalled product was distributed through Florida Hardware, LLC to feed stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and no illnesses had been reported as of the February 24, 2026 notice. Why it matters: For veterinary teams, this is another reminder that Salmonella recalls are both an animal health and zoonotic exposure issue. Dogs may show lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain, but some infected animals can remain asymptomatic and still shed the organism in feces and saliva. FDA and CDC guidance both emphasize that contaminated pet food and treats can expose people through handling the product, contact with pets that consumed it, or contaminated bowls, utensils, and household surfaces. What to watch: Watch for any expansion of the recall, additional state-level notices, or reports of animal or human illness tied to lot 24045. (fda.gov)
