AI in healthcare is growing, but clinicians still lead

Artificial intelligence is gaining ground across healthcare, and the latest literature keeps landing on the same conclusion: it can be powerful, but it isn’t ready to replace clinicians. A recent narrative review of healthcare AI described strong results in imaging, lab medicine, rehabilitation, and conversational systems, especially in controlled environments, while stressing persistent concerns around bias, ethical use, generalizability, and oversight. That matters because veterinary teams are approaching AI from two directions at once. On one side is the research literature, which shows growing interest in AI for companion animal diagnostics, health monitoring, behavior assessment, and welfare. A recent review of AI in companion animal care found momentum across those categories, but concluded that applications beyond diagnostics remain fragmented and insufficiently integrated into routine care. The gap between promise and proof is the central issue. Broader healthcare research also continues to show that many AI systems perform best in retrospective datasets or tightly controlled settings, with less certainty once they encounter messy, real-world workflows, shifting case mix, and uneven data quality. Public and stakeholder research in healthcare points the same way: people are generally more comfortable with AI that expands access to information or supports clinical work than with AI acting autonomously or replacing clinician interaction. Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, the near-term value of AI is likely to be operational first and clinical second. Tools that reduce note-writing, summarize records, surface missing information, and help standardize follow-up may offer the fastest return, especially in practices dealing with staffing strain and documentation overload. But clinics will need to ask harder questions before relying on any product for diagnostic or decision support: Was it validated externally? In what species and settings? How are errors surfaced?
