AI in care delivery is advancing, but clinicians remain central

Artificial intelligence is moving deeper into healthcare and veterinary medicine, but the clearest message from current reviews is that it’s still best understood as a support tool, not a substitute for clinical judgment. A recent narrative review in human healthcare found AI performs strongly in narrow, controlled tasks across diagnostic imaging, laboratory medicine, rehabilitation, and conversational tools, while stressing persistent concerns around generalizability, bias, ethics, and oversight. That caution is echoed outside veterinary medicine too: a recent systematic review and meta-analysis in BMC Oral Health found that even where AI-linked diagnostic estimates looked promising in a small subset of studies, limited sample sizes, heterogeneity, scarce external validation, and inconsistent reporting meant the evidence did not support AI as clinically decisive. In parallel, a 2025 systematic review in Animals found AI use in companion animal care is expanding beyond diagnostics into behavior, monitoring, and welfare applications, but remains fragmented and not yet well integrated into routine practice. Industry-facing veterinary content is also reflecting that shift, with vendors increasingly framing AI as workflow infrastructure, from documentation to client communication and triage support. Why it matters: For veterinary professionals, the takeaway isn’t whether AI is coming, it’s where it can safely add value now. Reviews of veterinary imaging and broader veterinary AI adoption both point to the same balance: AI may help with efficiency, pattern recognition, and documentation, but it still depends on high-quality data, transparent validation, and veterinarian oversight. The dental literature reinforces that point: in the impacted canine review, established imaging and reproducible spatial indicators offered the more practical framework, while AI was characterized as, at best, an adjunctive and hypothesis-generating tool pending stronger prospective evidence. That’s especially relevant as specialist surveys show optimism is outpacing AI literacy; in one recent ACVIM/ECVIM-CA survey, 39% of respondents reported using AI tools in clinical practice even though many rated their own knowledge as moderate, low, or none.
